Apple Weekly News Roundup: iPhone SE, iPhone 8 (yes, eight) and more

It should come as no surprise the latest Apple headlines mostly revolve around new products announced at Apple's media event in Cupertino. In other news, Netflix admitted throttling video streaming to AT&T and Verizon customers. Speaking of AT&T, they are now offering free Wi-Fi calling from anywhere in the world. Check out the latest highlights from the week in Apple.

Apple reveals iPhone SE and new iPad Pro

Apple introduced new products at its media event this week. Highlights included the iPhone SE and a 9.7-inch iPad Pro. Fans of the 4-inch iPhone form factor have many reasons to upgrade to SE. Most of the latest iPhone 6s hardware can be found in the iPhone SE, which starts at a remarkable $ 399.

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro also takes the latest improvements from the larger iPad Pro and packs them into a smaller size. Still there are some differences between the two iPad Pro models. This upgrade to the iPad Air lineup adds many features, but the trade off is an increase in price to $ 599.

iOS 9.3 released along with tvOS and watchOS updates

Apple gave fourth-generation Apple TV owners several reasons to update their set top boxes. The latest tvOS brings several new features to the Apple TV, including home screen folders, Siri dictation, and improved Siri Remote scrubbing controls.

There was some confusion for those with older iPhones, as Apple temporarily suspended iOS 9.3 updates due to an activation issue on the iPhone 5s and earlier. iOS 9.3 brings many improvements, however some iOS 9.3 features will not be available on older hardware. Apple will resume iOS 9.3 updates for all devices in a few days.

iPhone 8 speculation begins

It's never too early for leaks, speculation and rumors surrounding future iPhone models. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at KGI Securities has already jumped in the game, calling for an iPhone 8 with a 5.8-inch AMOLED display and curved glass. This is slightly larger than the current 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus. Kuo expects the the AMOLED iPhone 8 to add more biometric features and join the current sizes in the iPhone lineup in 2017.

AT & T offers International Wi-Fi calling

AT & T Mobility customers can now use Wi-Fi calling to connect from anywhere in the world with no additional fees. This means if you have a US number associated with your iPhone and you are connected to a Wi-Fi network in any country, calling another US number is included with your plan. AT & T initially limited the Wi-Fi calling program to the United States, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Netflix admits throttling AT & T and Verizon customers

Revelations about Netflix streaming have surfaced as a result of publicity brought on by T-Mobile's Binge On program. Both AT & T and Verizon mobile customers are currently limited to streaming at 600 kilobits per second by Netflix, not by their carriers. Netflix claims this protects customers from exceeding their data plan limits and incurring additional fees. T-Mobile and Sprint are not throttled by Netflix, since they have different data overage policies.
